«ΟΙ ΩΡΑΙΟΤΕΡΕΣ ΣΤΙΓΜΕΣ ΤΗΣ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗΣ ΦΙΛΟΣΟΦΙΑΣ».
The aim of this book is to present the main ideas of classical Greek philosophy in an inviting and instructive way.
Greek philosophy has been recognized as the model of deep and important thinking about man and his place in the cosmos. The eminent 20th century mathematician and philosopher A. N. Whitehead has written, with justified exaggeration, that western philosophy can be described as a series of footnotes to Plato.
Whitehead has recognized that Greek philosophy is quintessential. He captured the truth of the fact that this philosophy has been the basis of humanistic education and a model of imaginative and bold speculation through the ages and almost throughout the world.
Classical Greek thinkers have conceptualized our humanity in a lasting way. The ideas and vocabulary they fashioned for this purpose have provided the foundations and the vehicles for many of the spectacular achievements of the modem world. The sciences, the arts, the humanities, and especially the fields of literature and the philosophy of ethics and politics, grew out of the robust and inspiring Greek antecedents.
The readers who love things of the mind and fine language and reasoning will derive great pleasure and benefit from this anthology. But their most delightful intellectual experience will undoubtedly arise from Socrates’ seriously playful arguments and from Plato’s arresting theoretical constructions and his magical prose.
